Dr. Bauer advises domestic and international clients in the field of intellectual property law, with a focus on patent matters across all areas of engineering, as well as in design and trademark cases. His particular strengths lie in his holistic consulting approach and his ability to creatively develop tailored solutions that meet the individual needs of each client.

In drafting patent and design applications and guiding them through the grant procedure, Dr. Bauer applies established best practices, which he also shares in professional lectures. His areas of activity further include the enforcement of intellectual property rights, both in and out of court – including cease-and-desist letters, takedown requests on online platforms, out-of-court settlements, and patent infringement lawsuits – as well as the defense of our clients in infringement and nullity proceedings.

“What excites me about my work as a patent attorney is designing and prosecuting intellectual property rights that translate into tangible business advantages for our clients.”

– Ingo Bauer

        Detailed Profile

Dr. Bauer was born in Bonn in 1978. He studied mechanical engineering with a focus on manufacturing technology at RWTH Aachen University and received his degree as Diplom-Ingenieur in 2002. During his studies, he gained experience in the fields of rapid prototyping at the Fraunhofer IPT, control-integrated process monitoring of machine tools at the WZL of RWTH Aachen, and process monitoring in laser welding at the Fraunhofer ILT. He wrote his diploma thesis in the Department of Nonlinear Dynamics and Modeling at the Chair for Laser Technology of RWTH Aachen.

In 2000, Dr. Bauer spent four months as an exchange student at the Kyoto University of Technology in Japan.

In 2002, he began working as a research associate and doctoral candidate focusing on biomaterials at Fraunhofer CLT in the USA, Fraunhofer ILT in Aachen, and the Biomedical Materials and Engineering Research Center (BMEC) of Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT) in China. His work initially focused on laser joining of dissimilar biocompatible materials, and later on the synthesis of biocompatible nanoparticles and their interactions with cancer cells.

In 2006, he was honored with the “Distinguished Student Award” by WHUT for his academic achievements. In the same year, he successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis titled “Interactions of biomimetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles with liver cancer cells” and was awarded the Ph.D. degree by WHUT. At the same time, he also completed an M.B.A. in business administration.

After earning his doctorate, Dr. Bauer initially worked as a management consultant for a renowned international German consultancy in Düsseldorf, followed by a position as assistant to the board of a then MDAX-listed mechanical engineering company. However, his passion for science and technology soon led him back to research and development, joining a globally leading medical device manufacturer in northern Germany. There, he worked in the R&D department on bioresorbable implants, electronic components, and surgical instruments – from concept to market launch.

After four years in R&D, Dr. Bauer transitioned into the field of intellectual property and successfully completed his training as a patent attorney, with stations at the Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf, the German Patent and Trademark Office, and the Federal Patent Court. The following year, he was admitted as a representative before the European Patent Office.

Dr. Bauer represents national and international companies, focusing on patent and design law. Together with our clients, he develops and optimizes national and international intellectual property strategies and portfolios, for which he drafts and prosecutes patent and design applications. He has extensive experience in warning letters, blocking offers on online platforms, negotiating out-of-court settlements, and handling patent infringement litigation.

As a registered representative before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), Dr. Bauer also represents our clients in trademark matters at both national and European levels.

Dr. Bauer has been with GILLE HRABAL since 2012 and became a partner in 2019. He enriches our firm with his broad technological expertise, his international experience – especially in Asia – his practical industry background in R&D, and his deep knowledge in the field of medical technology.

He is married and has two children.
